International development

has seen dramatic change in recent years, and continues to rapidly evolve as we attempt to curtail explosive population growth. Globalization, technology, HIV/AIDS, polio eradication, tuberculosis, decreasing donor dollars, terrorism, conflict, weapons of mass destruction and failing states -- these are just some of the issues shaping today's world. Most of these issues - both good and bad -- do not recognize national borders. They affect us directly and are dramatically altering the way in which we think and live.

But we still face an uncertain future. In many developing countries, HIV/AIDS and other health issues are having a dramatic impact on social cohesiveness and economic strength, blocking the very development goals we seek. Virtually all the new democracies in the world today are fragile; others are democracies more in name than substance. Nearly a quarter of the people living in developing countries, or about one billion people, live in absolute poverty. There are a host of other threats - ranging from terrorism to infectious disease and violent conflict - that challenge us and the developing nations we seek to help.

Working in partnership, donors, national governments, aid workers and beneficiary populations all strive for improvement and equity in global health through participatory, community-based programs and national policy development aimed at informing, educating and changing behavior.

After decades of experience working in development, we have the information, sound technical approaches, tools and skilled public health professionals necessary to effect monumental change in morbidity and mortality, and to save lives of women and children around the globe. Research continues to be an essential component of international health, as vaccine development and other technologies will have long-lasting financial and life benefits.

However, a substantial increase in resources is needed to utilize these field-tested strategies and overcome the crucial global health issues we face today. Greater investment in global health now will yield compounded results in the future, producing a more peaceful, educated, healthy and productive world population.
